Water safety for toddlers: always with a grown-up

Actual gugiboard Kids Safety image: Water safety for toddlers: always with a grown-up

Small children can get into trouble in very little water. The water sheet shows a simple rule: water time is grown-up time.

What gugiboard shows

The danger photo shows water without an adult; the safe photo shows play with an adult right beside the child.

The message is read aloud in English, Spanish or Hebrew.

How to talk about it

Repeat: “Water? Call a grown-up.”

Let your child point to the adult in the safe photo.

What to notice while playing

Your child should come away with one rule, not a list: water means a grown-up is present.

The safe photo is deliberately calm, an adult right next to the child, and that is the picture you want in their memory.

A two-minute practice at home

Before the bath, ask “Who comes with us?” and wait for the answer.

Point out water outside the home, such as a puddle, a fountain or a pool, and use the same words every time.

Safety in real life

Never leave a child alone in the bath, empty buckets and fence pools.

Consider swimming lessons appropriate for your child’s age.
