Raising bilingual children at home: simple daily habits

Hearing two languages from an early age is a gift. You do not need to be an expert; small, consistent habits make a big difference.
Consistency over perfection
Choose moments for each language: songs in English at bath time, stories in Spanish at bedtime. Regular exposure matters more than perfect grammar.
Play in both languages
gugiboard switches instantly between English and Spanish. Play a board in one language, then switch and play it again.
Name everyday things
Use both words for objects at home: “la mesa, the table”. Children naturally learn that things can have two names.
Songs, books and family
Grandparents, songs and picture books are wonderful sources of language. Invite family members to speak their language with the child.
Patience
Bilingual children may mix languages or start speaking a little later—this is normal. Keep it joyful and seek professional advice if you have concerns.
