Counting with stars: first numbers through play

Numbers become meaningful when children can see and count real things. The Numbers board pairs each number with stars to count, one by one.
Seeing quantity
When a child taps 3, the number grows and three stars appear. Seeing the symbol and the quantity together helps build number sense.
Count out loud together
Point to each star and count slowly. Touching while counting teaches that each object gets one number.
Two languages, double fun
Count in English and then in Spanish: one, two, three… uno, dos, tres. Children enjoy hearing the same quantity with different words.
Counting everywhere
Count stairs, spoons, toys and steps on a walk. For older children, ask “How many if we add one more?” to start simple sums.
Celebrate trying
Mistakes are part of learning. Recount together, laugh and keep it light. Confidence matters more than speed.
