Stairs, windows and climbing: height safety for little explorers

Actual gugiboard Kids Safety image: Stairs, windows and climbing: height safety for little explorers

Falls are among the most common home accidents. Kids Safety includes a stairs sheet and a heights sheet about furniture and windows.

What gugiboard shows

The stairs sheet shows holding the handrail and an adult nearby. The heights sheet shows that we do not climb shelves, furniture or windows.

Safe or Dangerous adds scenes such as climbing furniture and jumping on the bed.

How to talk about it

Practice the phrase “One hand on the rail.”

Ask: “Where do we climb safely?” and point to a playground.

What to notice while playing

The two sheets differ: stairs is about the rail and the adult, heights is about furniture and windows. Saying which one you are on helps your child keep them apart.

Notice whether your child looks for the adult in the safe photo, because that is the habit you want on real stairs.

A two-minute practice at home

Go up one flight of stairs together with one hand on the rail, saying the words as you go.

Stand your child on the floor and ask them to point at anything they could climb, then move the tempting item down.

Safety in real life

Use stair gates, window guards and anchor tall furniture to the wall.

Offer safe climbing at the park so the urge to climb has a good place.
